I was at recess, daydreaming off in a semi-secluded area, ignoring the noisy recess background chatter to focus on my thoughts, and totally missed the bell to head back to class. I remember a similar event from elementary school. And once that filter is in place, it could be easy to miss the slight differences or specific words to signal the change without very loud and distinct sound cues to overcome the background noise, or a tap on the shoulder or some other non-sound stimulus. I could certainly imagine a second grade classroom having a similar sort of "white noise" chattiness to it that would require a strong mental filter to block it all out to focus on the book. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.Eh, depends how much the sound levels and other environmental cues did or didn't change between reading and math times, and how strongly the teacher tried to get his attention. I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please keep saying 'hyperfocus' if you like. This comment is meant solely to be informative. Your post has not been removed, and this is not a punitive action. It's that thing that makes you spend 10 hours doing something non-stop even when you know you need to stop and do something else. It is the inability to switch between tasks or mental activities. Perseveration, on the other hand, is part of the ADHD disorder. It's something almost all people are capable of, and specifically is not a benefit imparted by ADHD. "Hyperfocus" is a very poorly-defined word that, in the context of ADHD, generally refers to two superficially similar - but fundamentally different - mental states: flow and perseveration.įlow is a positive, beneficial state of deep immersion and high engagement in a task or activity, and is also usually accompanied by enjoyment of the task/activity. What are your experiences with hyper focus? Does everyone with ADHD experience it? Sometimes I have similar experiences with shows on Netflix where I watch them for hours but I am able to realise at some point that I’m hungry then I eat while I watch more or I go back to it. But I do remember stopping and looking at the time and being like “oh wow it’s late” 😅 like I was very time-blind I don’t remember whether I took breaks for the toilet or for food or anything because I haven’t played in months. I have played the sims a few times for around 4 or 5 hours straight. The closest thing I have experienced I guess, would be playing video games. There are so many things telling me I could very much have inattentive ADHD but right now I want to know what hyper focus is like, because I don’t know if I ever experienced it. So during all this time I have been asking my parents about my childhood and trying to connect dots and such. I have been researching and reading about ADHD for 7 months since I started suspecting I might have it. Im undiagnosed and waiting for assessment.
